Where we are

Where we are

Crete is the largest island of Greece and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. The coastline is over 1000 km long and is extremely varied in its characteristics, consisting of both sandy and rocky beaches and majestic mountainous scenery.

The high mountains are a characteristic of the Cretan landscape.

Crete enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with long, hot, dry summers and a winter, rainy season with snow in the  mountains.

The Makrigialos Region is situated in the South Eastern corner of Crete  Stretching from the coastal resort of Agia Fotia west of Makrigialos to Moni Kapsa to the East and from the Libyan Sea to the 1200 metres high (4,000 ft) mountains of Orno Oros in the North.

It  is renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches, magnificent mountains, quiet fishing villages and friendly people.

There are few places in Europe where you can find this combination of high mountains so close to the sea and within a few kilometres of sandy beaches.

Makrigialos is a fine example of this harmonious contrast. Its fertile soil, microclimate, abundant olive groves, vineyards and greenhouses (the principle crops being cucumbers and tomatoes as well as bananas and melons) ensure that Marigialos has a wonderful food culture, excellent produce and some very special wines..  In recognition of the natural beauty of the area and the importance of protecting the environment the local growers now produce organic olive oil and wine and the area was awarded a European gold medal for its oil.

Makrigialos village (it means long shore) is a charming fishing village. The harbour has fine fish tavernas and cafeterias.  There is a wonderful sandy beach and several other coves in the surrounding area. The village is well served with supermarkets, butcher, greengrocers, bakeries, chemists, bank, petrol station. There is a regular bus service connecting Makrigialos to Ierapetra and Sitia.

Surrounding Makrigialos are several mountain villages steeped in history with narrow winding streets, old and beautifully renovated stone houses encircled by geraniums, bougainvillea and vines, lemon and orange trees too numerous to count.  Daily life goes on as it has done for many decades and locals are never too busy to stop and welcome you.

Makrigialos offers something for everyone - The historian, the sun worshipper, the botanist, the ornithologist, the keen walker, the geologist and those of you in search of complete rest and relaxation.
